Jhula Devi Temple
Nestled in the serene valley of Kumaon hills, is the temple of JhulaDevi. Located in Chaubatia Gardens, at a distance of 7km from the city center of Ranikhet, Jhula Devi Temple is one of the most popular shrines of Goddess Durga. Jhula Devi got its name as the presiding deity Goddess Durga sits on a wooden swing known as ‘Jhula’ in Hindi.
This beautiful temple seems to find its origin in the 8th Century, but the new temple compound was built in 1935 which covers a vast territory. Surrounded by forest terrain, Jhula Devi temple Ranikhet is easily accessible to its visitors. According to the Legends, the villagers were troubled by the regular attacks of wild animals. They prayed to Maa Durga for protection. It is said that the Goddess appeared in a shepherd’s dream and promised to safeguard the villagers. Since then, Jhula Devi is worshipped as the protector of the village. It is believed that the Goddess protects the villagers from the attacks of wild animals.
One of the major attractions that catch everyone’s attention is the bells. It is believed that if anyone donates a bell to the temple, their wish is fulfilled in due course of time. The enchanting sound of these bells can be heard from afar. These bells are like a testimony to the divine power of the Goddess.
There are various ways one can reach this shrine. By train, the nearest station is Kathgodam, at a distance of nearly 75 km. If one prefers air travel, the nearest airport is the Pantnagar Airport at a distance of 109km.
The best time to visit the Jhula Devi temple
is from April to June and between September and October. This temple is a must-visit place for all the devotees of Maa Durga. History buffs who love to know about mythology and of course all the wanderers looking for their next adventure must come by this shrine at least once.
