In 2020, a web series was released. The story was not mainstream, with no famous faces, yet it became the biggest hit. It was none other than ‘Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story.’ This story was not like an ordinary web series. It revolved around the stock market, shares, and what not, yet people loved it. The mastermind behind coming up with this story was none other than Sumit Purohit.
Sumit grew up in Srinagar, Uttarakhand. Ever since childhood, he had wanted to be an animator. He wanted to bring characters to life. His fondness for cinema kept growing, and as he grew, his interest in filmmaking grew.
For his higher education, he went to the Faculty of Fine Arts, MS University in Baroda, Gujarat. He extensively studied the art of theatre. In his college days, he usually carried his handy cam and recorded various short films and videos.
His directorial debut was with a short film titled – ‘I woke up one morning and found myself famous.’ This short film was screened at various film festivals across the nation. He has also worked on films such as ‘Bangistan,’ which is a dark comedy.
He is a self-taught editor and has worked as a trailer/ promo editor in many award-winning films.
However, out of all, his most notable work is none other than ‘Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta story.’ It was a story about the biggest financial scam in India that took place in the early 1980s and 1990s. It was a different story, not the usual rom-com or action series liked by the Indian audience, yet it outshone every series and stood out.
Sumit Purohit writer believes that if you can present a story where the audience resonates with the character, then it is sure to be appreciated. He believes that there is a vast ocean of opportunities for the future writer as no movie is complete without a good story to tell. He also says that people always remember the storyline of the movie, not its box office business.
His hard work was rewarded when he was selected amongst the 10 personalities for the BAFTA breakthrough program. Speaking of his future endeavors, he has a feature documentary named ‘Charlie Champion’ in post production stage. Sumit Purohit has carved a way for all aspiring writers to pursue their dreams fearlessly and present raw and relatable stories.
