GandiKhagoti Fair is celebrated in Chhavicha village of Pauri district of the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The fair starts from Basant Panchami and continues till Baisakhi. The GandiKhagoti fair holds immense cultural significance and used to be one of the most awaited fairs. However, like other cultural fairs, its importance has diminished over time. According to folklore, the Khagoti fair was started in the time of Mahabharata. Yudhishthira needed the skeleton of a rhinoceros for the last rites of his father, Pandu. The Pandavas started their search and, during the search, came across a flock of rhinos grazing near Hariyali lake under the supervision of Nagmal and Nagmati (Naga caste couple). When Arjun tried to kill a rhinoceros, the Naga couple opposed him. As a result, a fight ensued between the Naga couple and Arjuna. Arjun finally succeeded in killing the rhinoceros after a lot of effort. The GandiKhagoti Mela honors the tradition of the Pandavas discovering the rhinoceros by carrying out the event at the temple of the goddess located in the center of the village. The five Pandavas, and the Nagmal, and Nagmati are depicted while dancing. The woman dressed as Nagmati holds a pumpkin in her lap, which symbolizes the rhinoceros. Pandavas target the rhinoceros with their bow and arrows and protect Nagmati protects the rhinoceros from the arrows. Three days before the fair, the idols of the deities are polished and decorated. Dhol and music are played throughout the night, and people perform dance forms of Thadiya, Chaufla, and Jhumela throughout the night. On the last day of this Uttarakhand fair, people go to their respective homes and conclude the festival by singing traditional songs.
