Berinag is also known as Bedinag or Beninag. Berinag is located in the Pithoragarh district of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.
Near the city of Berinag is a temple named Beninag, which is a historical temple and one of the most famous temples of the Kumaon region. The popularity of this temple is so much in the surrounding area that after the name of this temple, even the city was called Beninag.
Gradually, with the passage of time, first Beninag was changed to Bedinag, and then the name of the city was changed from Bedinag to Berinag in the British state.
Berinag Pithoragarh is historically considered to be within the Gangotri region. The Katyuri dynasty ruled here before the thirteenth century. After the thirteenth century, the Man Koti kings imposed their rule here, and the capital of the state was at Mankot.
King Kalyan Chand of the Kumaon region invaded Mankot in the sixteenth century and took the Gangoli region under his control. Until 1790, this area was part of Kumaon, after which the Gorakh winds attacked and took it under their control, and then in 1815, the British took this area under their control in the Gurkha War.
For two centuries, tea gardens were found in the Berinag and Chakori region as many tea gardens were planted here during British rule.
Till 1964-65, there were tea gardens in the area of 9667 drains.
In the 80s and 90s, the production of tea in these gardens had ended, and gradually the whole city was settled. The Berinag area was connected to several nearby districts through Rai Agar Arun Bihari, and for this reason, in 2004, 289 villages of Didihat tehsil were transferred to form Berinag tehsil.
In 2014, the road passing through the city center was declared a National State Road and renamed as 309A connecting Berinag with Almora Bageshwar and Gangolihat.
The city of Berinag Uttarakhand is at latitudes of 29.776 degrees and longitudes of 80.056 degrees. Its height is approximately 1,860 m above sea level. Berinag city is 460 km northeast of the capital Delhi and 380 km east of Dehradun.
Berinag is a city situated in the Kumaoni hills of the Himalaya mountain Jiao Chetra, and in the first forests around the city, deodar dams and sal trees are found in abundance, most of the mountains here are made of slate Ganesh and granite, etc.
Being in the hilly area of Berinag city, the most accessible means of transport here is by road, apart from this the road originates from Rai Agar, some distance from the city. The city is well connected to all other major cities of Kumaon in terms of bus service.
