The Mukhba holds high religious importance. Mukhba is a place where the Ganges rises from the top of the idol of Ganga. The Gangotri river in the upper Himalayas from the Gangotri region becomes inaccessible during winters due to snowfall. Every year in the temple of Goddess Ganga, the idol festival is celebrated with pomp during Diwali, accompanied by a procession by the devotees. A Royal procession by the Army Band of the Garhwal is also organized.
In the town of Harsil (Uttarkashi), Mukhba is a small town situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. Tourists have to cross this small village to visit Gangotri. Mukhba is situated at an altitude of 2,620 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by the white Shrikanth snow peak in Uttarkashi, with lush green gardens spreading far in its lower part. The evergreen Ganga Bhagirathi flows in the foothills amongst the lush green trees of decor. Such a feeling is a gift of nature in itself, and this gift leads to Gangotri Dham.
