Other than Tungnath, the famous temple of Lord Shiva Makkumath is another great place for Shiva worship. In winter, when the doors of Tungnath are closed, then Shiva is worshiped only in Makkumath. This temple resembles Kedarnath and Tungnath temple in architecture. Earlier the temple was set at the ground level. Later, when the dam was built here, the water level of the Alaknanda river increased a lot. Thus, the temple was brought to a height.
Pilgrims who come to visit the temple of Tungnath definitely visit here too. Lord Shiva’s Doli comes from the Tungnath temple to the Makkumath temple in the month of November. After that, Lord Tungnath resides in Makkumath for six months. In the month of November, the doors of Tungnath are closed due to harsh winters and snowfall. All the roads are closed, and Nath’s Doli comes to Makkumath. Makkumath temple is also called the winter abode of Lord Tungnath.
