Havildar Gajender Singh Bisht was born on July 1, 1972. Gajender was an NSG commando and Havildar. He was courageous, and because of his act of bravery, he was honored with the Ashoka Chakra by the President of India on January 26, 2009.
Early life
Hav Gajender was from Ganeshpur in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. When he was young, he studied at the Janata Inter College in Naya Gaon.
His teachers remember that he was one of the most active students in school and participated in every cultural and school event. He had a particularly great interest in boxing events.
Career
Hawaldar Gajendra Singh Bisht was in National Security Guard’s 51 Special Action Group as a member. He was also a part of the team of NSG commandants who were fast-roped on the roof of Nariman House in operation to catch the terrorists inside who were holding on to six hostages.
He was leading one of the teams that entered the Nariman House to neutralize the terrorists. There was a point where the terrorists threw a grenade towards him, but he continued moving forward without thinking twice.
He kept leading despite taking multiple bullets to his chest, clearing the way for his team to cover and neutralize the situation there.
He was the one who got martyred during the Black tornado Operation on Nariman House in Mumbai.
When his dead body arrived in his village, the entire village gathered to bid goodbye to his hero, who had made them proud.
Birender Singh Bisht, Gajendra’s elder brother, said that Gajendra always wanted to die a hero’s death, and that is what happened. His teachers, colleagues, everyone who knew him was proud of his act of valor.
The college where he studied was shut down for a day, and the whole staff and college students were there to pay him respect and honour.
