Located 35 km from Devprayag in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand, Maa Chandrabadni Temple is one of the 52 Shaktipeeths of Mata. This temple of Maa Bhagwati is on the Srinagar Tehri motorway. It is believed that Siddhapeeth was established here after the cut part of Mother Sati’s body fell on the Chandrakoot mountain located here. Hence the place was named Maa Chandrabadni Temple. It is said that Maa Parvati committed Sati in the Havan Kund after being saddened by the sacrifice of her father, Daksha. After this, Lord Shankar became sad and started roaming in many places, keeping the dead body of Mother Sati on his shoulder. Shiva came to his real form after coming to the Chandrakoot mountain.
It is believed that even today, Gandharvas and Apsaras dance in the court of the mother on the Chandrakoot mountain. Apart from this, Gandharvas sing songs here at night. It is also known that Adi Guru Shankaracharya, influenced by the Sriyantra, established the Chandrabadni temple on Chandrakoot mountain. Chandrabadni temple is said to belong to the 8th century. In the temple, instead of the idol of Maa Chandrabadni, only the Shree Yantra is installed. It is said that the body part of Mother Sati fell here. Because of this, no one can have the darshan of the idol of the Goddess.
There is a special thing about this temple. It is said that there is no idol of Goddess Chandrabadni in this temple. Here only the Shree Yantra of the Goddess is worshipped. It is said that in this temple sanctum sanctorum, the Shree Yantra is made on a rock. A large silver umbrella is placed over it. The archaeological remains of this temple show that this temple was built centuries ago. It is said that even the king here never hindered the work of the temple due to the fear of the Mother Goddess. Chandrabadni is said to be the form of Mother Sati.
The priests of this temple also bathe Maa Chandrabadni by wearing a blindfold. There is a folk belief that once a priest had tried to see the idol alone by mistake. After this, the priest went blind. Because of this, since then, the idol here is taken care of only after wearing a blindfold. Devotees can never have the darshan of this idol. Devotees only have darshan of the Shri Yantra. On Ashtami and Navami in Chaitra, Ashwin, nine girls are worshiped here in the form of Navadurga. In India, anyways, girls are said to be the form of Goddess. This recognition is especially important in Uttarakhand. Chandrabadni Temple is situated amidst dense forests and many caves. Uttarakhand is anyway called Devbhoomi because of its beliefs and miracles.
