Kartik Swami temple is dedicated to the eldest son of Lord Shiva, Kartikeya. Nestled in the wonderlands of Garhwal and hidden amongst the clouds that carelessly float around it, this beautiful temple is located at an altitude of 3050 feet near Kanak Chauri village in Rudraprayag. It has become a favorite destination amongst youngsters as well for its mild trek of 3 km. Apart from the scenic views, the devotees find the mythology surrounding the temple quite intriguing.
According to Hindu Mythology, Lord Shiva asked both of his sons Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeyato complete seven rounds around the world and the winner would get the right to be worshipped first. Ganesha took seven rounds around his parents stating that they are his world. Lord Shiva impressed by his answer declared him the winner. In the meanwhile, Lord Kartikeya came to know about this incident and got angry. As a testimony of his devotion, he devoted his bones to Lord Shiva and his flesh to Goddess Parvati. It is believed that to this day, his bones are worshipped in this mystical temple.
The temple is situated at the highest point of the mountain. The thrilling trek that takes people through rugged terrain and enchanting scenery is an experience that surely cannot be missed. On the way, the beautiful peaks of Chaukhamba, Dronagiri, and Neelkanth can be seen. One can hear the sounds of the bells from around 80 meters distance from the temple. The aura around this temple is so soothing and charismatic, it compels its visitor to make a plan to revisit soon.
During March and April, one can expect the trek to be full of blossoming rhododendrons. August to September is a season to enjoy the luscious greenery and from December to January, all the snow-capped mountains are visible in their full glory. There is a fair organized every year on Kartik Purnima in June which brings a lot of festivities.
One can easily reach the temple via Haridwar. Taking a bus from Haridwar to Rudraprayag and then taking a sharing cab or a bus to the temple is one of the easiest routes. kartik swami temple uttarakhand
