According to mythology, Bilkeshwar Mahadev Temple is the place where Goddess Parvati worshiped Shiva, and when Shiva appeared, she asked him to accept her as his wife. Bilva is a tree that is very sacred to Hindus. Its leaves represent the three eyes of Lord Shiva. This ancient temple is very popular among the locals.
The temple is situated in a hilly area surrounded by forest. It is a small temple with a Shiva Linga and Nandi made of stone. There is a tradition of offering Bilva leaves to Lord Shiva and anointing the Shivling with the water of river Ganga.
Just 50 steps away from Bilkeshwar Mahadev Temple is the famous kund known as “Gauri Kund.” It is believed that Mata Parvati used to bathe in this kund (sacred pond) during her penance. There is always a huge crowd outside the pool. Devotees fill the water of the pool and take it to their homes. Devotees believe that this water will purify our house.
In the Bilkeshwar Mahadev temple Haridwar, Mahadev is often bathed with white snow, white flowers, white milk, and curd. Various types of decorations are done in the temple during the Sawan week as well as Bhandara is arranged for the people outside. The temple is very close to Haridwar Junction railway station and can be reached on foot.
