Katarmal is situated at a distance of 1.5 km from Village Kosi and 12 km from the Almora district, and 70 km from the Nainital district.
It is situated at the height of 2116 m above sea level and is well connected by roadway.
Katarmal is well known for a very famous and rare Surya temple. Katarmal sun temple history dates back to the 9th century, it was constructed by the KatyuriKings . The king from the Katyuri dynasty built this temple. There are 44 smaller temples around the main Surya temple which are known assBurhadita or Vraddhaditya.
Other smaller temples like Shiva-Parvathi and Lakshmi-Narayana are also located in this temple. The beautiful old heritage wooden doors and panels were dislocated to the National Museum, Delhi, after a very precious idol of God from the 10th century was stolen from the temple.
Katarmal Temple is a beautiful Surya temple which is also known as the ‘Bara Aditya temple.’ To reach Katarmal, one has to trek almost three km cand cross Hawalbagh and Matela, near Koshi River. The Katarmal Temple is the only Sun temple in Kumaon, Uttarakhand.
Katarmal Sun Temple almora is said to be the second most popular and important Sun temple in India after Konark Sun Temple, located in Orrisa. It is the only Sun temple located in the hills of Uttarakhand.
