Chandrashila, which means the ‘Moon Rock,’ is situated in the uphills of Tungnath Temple, in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand.
It is located at the height of about 3690 meters above sea level.
Chandrashila trek can be completed by a short distance of 1.5 km from Tungnath. The base camp for the trek is Chopta. The distance of the Chopta to Tungnath trek is 4 km, and that of Tungnath to Chandrashila is 1.5 km. It takes around 4 hours on average to cover this distance. Chandrashila is the summit point of Chopta Chandrashila Trek. We get to capture the beauty of the snow-covered peaks of the Himalayas like Mt. Trishul, Nanda Devi, Kedarnath, Nanda Ghunti, and Chaukhambha from the summit point of Chandrashila.
The Chopta Chandrashila trek has a vibrant and glorifying history. It is believed that Lord Rama meditated here after defeating Ravana. Another story says that Moon God Chandra spent time here in penance.
All through the way to the Chandrashila trek, one gets to witness the beautiful red, pink and scarlet Rhododendrons bloomed all along.
Chandrashila is a high-altitude trek that can be done for almost six months in the year. The trek starts in spring between March and April. The trek opens in autumn and continues till December.
During the last week of December, the Chopta region receives heavy snowfall, due to which the road to Chopta is cut off.
In summers, Chandrashila is surrounded by lush greenery and elegant beauty. The forest and alpine meadows look bright and sunny during this season.
