Bageshwar is a pilgrimage site located on the banks of the confluence of the Ganges and the Gomti rivers in Uttarakhand.
There is also an old temple named Bageshwar so that the common people call it Bagnath. This river has great importance in the freedom struggle also. During the non-cooperation movement, the people here supported the non-cooperation movement by shedding the registers of forced labor in the Saryu river.
The biggest fair of Uttarakhand is organized here on the day of Makar Sankranti in the month of January.
According to the old legend, Maharishi Vashishtha was bringing with him the river Saryu, which emerged from the Kamandal of Brahma with his Tapobal. So that his tenacity should not be disturbed, Saryu stopped there. Sage Vashishtha worshiped Shiva and asked him for his help, and Shivji and Parvati Mata together solved this problem. Only then Saryu river was able to move forward.
When Shiva was finding a solution to this problem, both had taken the form of a garden, due to which the name of this place was named Bageshwar.
The Bageshwar temple was built by Raja Laxmi Chand in 1450 AD. However, a rock is present before AD. Every year on the occasion of Shivratri, there is a huge crowd here. Devotees from nearby places and from far and wide also come to see Shiva.
This is the only ancient Shiva temple in North India, which is south-facing, and where Shiva and Parvati are together in the middle of Jalhari. The Dev Mandir is quite ancient, and the wall carvings here are quite different and beautiful.
