Uttarakhand is often known as ‘Devbhoomi’ or the Land Of Gods. It harbors thousands of temples of various gods and goddesses. One such temple is the Jageshwar Temple or the Jageshwar Dham. Jageshwar Dham is one of the ‘Jyotirlingas’ of Lord Shiva. It is one of the finest examples of ancient architecture in Uttarakhand.
Situated at a height of 6,135 feet and around 34 kilometers from Almora is the medieval temple of Jageshwar that dates back to the ‘Katyuri Era’. The temple complex is surrounded by a dense forest valley and river Jatganga flowing along its side. The temple compound consists of 124 small and big temples of various deities which date back to the 7th – 11th century CE.
According to the local beliefs, Pandavas had their last rites performed here, on the bank of Jatganga on their way to Swargarohani. Jageshwar is Eighth amongst the 12 jyotirlingas in India. It is well known for its Swayambhu Linga. It is considered to be one of the most sacred temples in the Kumaon region. Legends also suggest that it is the abode of Lord Shiva, which he visited to escape the cold climate of Kailasha.
Folklores suggest that Guru Adi Shankaracharya re-established and renovated many temples here. One may notice the cremation ceremonies being performed on the banks of river Jatganga. Locals believe that they attain Moksha or eternal peace upon being cremated here.
One of the most important temples of the compound is that of Mahamrityunjaya( Conqueror Of Death). The temple’s architecture, especially its wall carvings and scriptures sculpted on the walls is a major highlight.
Among the temples, The Kuber Temple and The BalaMahadev Temple are the most famous amongst devotees. One of the unique temples that can be spotted here is that of Pashti Devi, the Wife of Lord Ganesha.
